Latham provides a general framework for determining the extent to
which pairwise models can be used to predict the behavior of
large biological systems.
Wertheim & Worobey provide a temporal reference for the
evolution of SIV in its natural primate hosts. They find that SIV
may have infected these hosts for only hundreds of years before
giving rise to HIV, casting doubt on the theory that long-term
viral-host coevolution has led to SIV avirulence.
Steven A. Niederer & Nicolas P. Smith (University of
Oxford) use a computational model to analyse the complex web of
feedback loops which regulate heart contraction. They show that
feedback at the cellular level is a key control mechanism at the
whole organ level.
