Land Use

Sustained economic growth, coupled with population and income growth, have brought about rapid change in land use and created a tremendous need for in-depth economic analysis of land use patterns.

Research and Extension faculty in the Department are actively engaged with a number of land use issues. Economic considerations involving land use are considered in several of our classes.

Our students also take classes in other departments in CASNAR and the University that include land use topics. The Natural Resource and Environmental Economics concentration lists several of them.

 

The Department is engaged in studying a variety of issues related to land use and land use change including: interactions between land development and value, the effects of urban growth boundaries, valuation of open space, the policy and practice of land conservation, urban sprawl, real estate submarket structure, housing price and land development forecasting, and farmland fragmentation.

Our Extension faculties collaborate with county Extension offices to assist individuals and communities make better informed land use decisions. Efforts include helping to identify and understand the issues involved in a particular decision, to evaluate results from research that addresses the issues at hand, to evaluate potential outcomes, and to better understand land use policy, law and regulation.
