Schafer Honors Creative Neighbors Helping the Hungry |

Jan 8, 2009 – Honoring creative and caring efforts to help the hungry in communities
around the country, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer has congratulated volunteers
in the Fight Hunger Initiative whose involvement has also shown how rewarding and
practical it is to help their neighbors.

USDA's "Stocks for
Food" Program Turns Raw
Commodities into Food
|
Dec. 4 — At a time when
more and more people
need help to feed their
families, USDA is using
a creative "Stocks for
Food" bartering
initiative to turn
government stocks of
commodities such as
cotton, grains, peanuts,
and non-fat dry milk
into products such as
canned vegetables, meats
and peanut butter to
help stock food banks
and feeding programs.

Dec. 3, 2008 — As a result of the melamine contamination
of Chinese infant formula,
the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) began testing
manufactured infant formula for melamine detection. FDA’s study indicates that levels of melamine found in infant formula are extremely low and
should not raise public health concerns. FNS
relies on FDA’s
authority regarding the
safety of infant formula
available in the U.S.

— The FDA Science Board met
today to review a report on Bisphenol A (BPA), an ingredient used to make epoxy resins used as
protective food safety linings of metal based food cans, including liquid concentrate
infant formula, and polycarbonate (hard plastic) used to make some baby bottles.

Sept. 29, 2008 — USDA
today announced the
advent of a new era in
nutrition assistance at
USDA. The Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP) is the
new name of the Food
Stamp Program, as a
result of the recently
enacted Food,
Conservation, and Energy
Act of 2008 (P.L.
110-246), also known as
the Farm Bill.

Eligibility Determination Pilot for the
CACFP |
July
31. 2008 — The Child Nutrition
and Women, Infants, and Children
(WIC) Reauthorization Act of
2004 authorized a demonstration
pilot of the Child and Adult
Care Food Program (CACFP) in
rural areas in Nebraska. The
Nebraska Rural Area Eligibility
Determination for Day Care Homes
Pilot (NeRAED Pilot) made it
easier for family day care home
providers in rural Nebraska to
qualify for higher rates of
reimbursements for meals and
snacks provided under the
program.

Trends in Food Stamp Program
Participation Rates |
June 13, 2008 — The Food Stamp Program helps
low-income individuals purchase
food so that they can obtain a
nutritious diet. One important
measure of Program performance
is the ability to reach its
target population, as indicated
by the fraction of people
eligible for benefits who
actually participate. The
findings represent national
participation rates for FY 2006.
