July 10, 2008

The Saskatchewan Forest Centre (SFC) announced a new partnership. The SFC is partnering with the University of Regina and Canadian Green Fuels to form the Canadian Biofuel and Energy Research and Technology Centre (or C-BERT).

"The partnership opens up new opportunities for the SFC in supporting "green" initiatives of government and industry" said Sherry Michalyca, Chair of the SFC. "It also is a huge step in the new direction of the SFC: that of expanding and growing new and competitive businesses in the forest sector."

The partnership will see a variety of technologies and resources applied to development of viable biofuel industry in Saskatchewan using biomass gasification to produce a clean fuel. The fuel will be developed in part using wood fibre from the forests of the province.

"The SFC will be providing specialists, expertise and leadership in the area of applied science to use the resources and knowledge to support a growing forest economy," said Rob Woodward, CEO of the SFC. "Partnerships provide opportunities and our new direction is to link the resource, the business and the market with the science/technology to help form a renewed and savvy forest economy for Saskatchewan."
