For Users with Disabilities

Stanford University Libraries are committed to serving all members of the Stanford community. If you have problems or special needs, ask for help at any library public service desk. Call specific libraries for advice on access and to make an appointment for reference assistance.

The Disabilities Resource Center provides a wide range of services on campus.

Libraries

Green Library

  • Reference: staff members at the Information Center Desk (725-1064) provide aid in using Stanford's reference resources, including Socrates (SU Catalog) and other online resources.
  • Circulation: staff members at the Loan Desk will page materials from the stacks. Send your request to greencirc@stanford.edu 24 hours in advance.
  • Access: Green Library has three elevators. Use the Green East elevator to access all floors in that wing. Use the Bing Wing elevator to access all floors and stacks in the Bing Wing. Use the elevator in the hallway between the wings for access to the West Basement.

Meyer Library (second floor) is home to The Assistive Learning Technical Center (ALTEC)

Other Stanford Libraries

Archive of Recorded Sound. General information (650) 723-9312.
The Archive is located in the basement of Braun Music Center, and is accessible by the elevator in the Music Library.

Art and Architecture Library. Circulation Desk, (650) 723-3408.
The Art Library reading room, which is on the ground floor, is accessible to patrons with limited mobility. However, there is only stairway access to the stacks. The Art Library staff will be happy to page desired items from the stacks.

Branner Earth Sciences Library. Circulation Desk, (650) 723-2746.
The library is accessible to persons with limited mobility by using the elevator from the first floor. Persons unable to ascend stairs should ask at the Circulation Desk in order to gain access to the maps on the mezzanine.

Cubberley Education Library. Circulation Desk, (650) 723-2121.
The Education Library is partially accessible to persons with limited mobility. An elevator on the first floor provides wheelchair access. Ask at the circulation desk for help obtaining library materials.

East Asia Library, Circulation Desk, (650) 725-3435.
The East Asia Library is accessible to patrons with limited mobility.

Engineering Library. Circulation, (650) 723-0001.
The library is located on the second floor of the Terman Engineering Center at Stanford University. The Terman Engineering Center is on Samuel Morris Way between Santa Teresa Street and Panama Street. Please call for information about accessibility.

Falconer Biology Library. Circulation, (650) 723-1528.
The Biology Library is partially accessible to people with limited mobility. There is no elevator Hall. Wheelchair access to the main floor of the library is by means of the elevator in Herrin Laboratories and then across the breezeway. The elevator in Herrin Laboratories is accessible from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday, except for University holidays. For access to the library during other hours, call (650) 723-1528. The mezzanine level of the library is not wheelchair-accessible. Ask at the circulation desk for help getting inaccessible materials. The public photocopy machines in the library are not wheelchair-accessible.

Hoover Institution Library and Archives. (Coordinate library.)

  • The Hoover Institution Library is accessible by a ramp located on the west side of the Hoover Tower, between the Tower and the Cummings Art Building. For more information about accessibility for the Hoover Library, or to page materials from the stacks 24 hours in advance, please call the Circulation Desk at (650) 723-2058 or send your request to hoovercirc@hoover.stanford.edu.
  • The Hoover Institution Archives is located on the courtyard level of the Herbert Hoover Memorial Building. Wheelchair accessibility is via a ramp from Crothers Way (behind the Herbert Hoover Memorial Building and Hoover Tower, between the Herbert Hoover Memorial Building and Green Library) and then an elevator just inside the front door of the building. Jackson Library (Coordinate library, Graduate School of Business.) (650) 723-2162.

Jonsson Library of Government Documents is located in the Bing Wing of Green library. It is open to the public and wheelchair accessible.

Lane Medical Library. (Coordinate library, School of Medicine.) Circulation, (650) 723-6691.
Lane is accessible to people with limited mobility.

Mathematical and Computer Sciences Library. General Information, (650) 723-4672.
The library is located in Sloan Mathematics Center (Building 380) on the fourth floor. An elevator on the first floor provides wheelchair access to patrons with limited mobility.

Miller Marine Biology Library. General Information, (831) 655-6229.
The library is located at the Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, CA. It is accessible to people with limited mobility. Holdings are listed in Socrates; users on the main campus interested in obtaining materials should contact the staff in the Falconer Biology Library, the Branner Earth Sciences Library, the Lane Medical Library, Interlibrary Loan Services in the Green Library, or contact the Librarian directly.

Music Library. (650) 723-1211.
The Music Library is located in Braun Music Center. The entrance is on the ground floor. The book and score stacks in the basement are accessible by elevator.

Physics Library. General Information, (650) 723-4342.
The library is located on the third floor of the Varian Building and is partially accessible to persons with limited mobility. Wheelchair access is by means of elevator on first floor. Wheelchair users should ask at circulation desk for help getting materials from the mezzanine.

Robert Crown Law Library. (Coordinate Library, School of Law.) (650)-723-2477.
Please call for information about accessibility.

Special Collections and University Archives. Reference, (650) 725-1022.
The Department's reading room is located on the second floor of Green Library's Bing Wing. Green Library is wheelchair accessible; use the Bing Wing elevator.

Stanford Auxiliary Library [SAL1&2]. General Information, (650) 723-9201.
SAL is located at 691 Pampas Lane, across from the University's Credit Union. The facility is accessible to wheelchair users.

Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) Library. General Information and Circulation, (650) 926-2411.
The SLAC Library is located in the Central Lab Building (40) on the 2nd Floor in room Y215. The street address is 2575 Sand Hill Road. Pleaase call for information about accessibility.

Swain Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Library. General Information, (650) 723-9237.
Swain Library is partially accessible to persons with limited mobility. Please ask at the circulation desk for help in getting materials located in compact shelving or on upper/lower shelves. If you will need staff assistance, please call Swain in advance because Swain is often staffed by only one person.
