Who: Mike White, ISU Extension Viticulture Specialist

Mike White has been working closely with the Iowa vine/wine industry since January 2000. Since that time this Iowa industry has grown from about 5 winegrape vineyards covering 15 acres to 400+ vineyards covering 920+ acres. The number of Iowa licensed wineries has increased from 13 in 2000 to 74 today. This industry has now become a significant factor in revitalizing rural tourism and economic vitality. Come learn how you can be a part of this dynamic and challenging industry.

Notes: A CD of all the presentations, grape spray guides, and other materials will be provided to attendees at the end of this series. $10 each for additional copies of CD. Refreshments and snacks will be provided during each session.

Cost:

Midwest Wine Growing Conference

The Minnesota Grape Growers Association (MGGA) invites those interested in cold climate grape growing and winemaking to attend its 5th annual conference Feb. 12-14, 2009 in Bloomington, MN. The conference theme is “Northern Viticulture: Pursuing Excellence.”

Beginning grape growing and winemaking sessions will be held Thursday, from 6 to 9 PM followed by two full days of more advanced education sessions with networking and trade show opportunities. A “Midwest Wine Stroll” will be held on Friday evening to showcase the region’s best cold climate wines. The weekend concludes Saturday with a gourmet banquet including Midwest wines.

February 25 and 26, 2009

Dr. Clifford Ohmart of the Lodi Winegrape Commission will be visiting Iowa State University. He will be presenting a series of lectures on sustainable winegrowing and integrated pest management (IPM). There will be a roundtable discussion on sustainable viticulture with wine/viticulture practitioners and researchers; and also a Slow Food wine tasting, potluck dinner, and showing of the new film, Bottle Shock.

These lectures are free and open to the public. To help offset the cost of the wine, for the Slow Food Wine tasting, donations are appreciated.

Slow Food wine tasting and showing of the movie “Bottle Shock.”  Semi-formal tasting of Iowa wines followed by a potluck of locally procured foods. Hosted by Sociology professors Jan and Cornelia Flora.

We will also be watching the new film “Bottle Shock,” which tells the story of the dramatic event that brought attention the quality of American wine.

It is understood that out-of-towners will not be able to contribute to the potluck, so will have plenty of food provided by Slow Food members. We will be asking for donations from wine tasters to help cover the cost of wine.

Clifford P. Ohmart

Cliff Ohmart has a B.Sc. degree in forest biology from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of California Berkeley. He is currently the Research/IPM Director for the Lodi Winegrape Commission where he is helping winegrape growers implement sustainable farming practices in their vineyards. He is the architect of the Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing, California’s first third party-certified sustainable winegrowing program. He has authored and co-authored many publications in international research journals. His most recent publications are senior author of Lodi-Winegrower’s Workbook: A self-assessment of integrated farming practices, published in 2000 by the Lodi-Woodbridge Winegrape Commission and revised in 2008, and co-editor of the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices Self-Assessment Workbook published in 2002 by the Wine Institute and California Association of Winegrape Growers. He serves on the following Boards: Protected Harvest, Association of Applied IPM Ecologists and the National Grape and Wine Initiative.
