National History Day

Welcome to the Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum.  We are proud to once again be research sponsors for
National History Day (NHD).

We are excited to present you with a featured collection through the National Postal Museum's Arago website.  This featured collection, A Student's Guide to Historical Research, will help you to define your research project and analyze primary and secondary sources.  It is focused on this year's NHD theme, “The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies,” but the process it lays out will also be useful with other historical research projects.

Great historians use multiple resources, so here
are some other helpful websites for you to visit:

Once You Have Your Topic
Visit the Arago website to search through an online collection of objects and collection information.  One of the over 13,000 objects in Arago might be just the primary or secondary resource you're looking for.

Once You Have Some Resources
Check out the National Postal Museum's Guide for Using Postal History Primary Resources.  This guide is especially useful if you are analyzing letters, newspapers, postcards, envelopes, or anything else that was delivered through the mail.  Also look at Looking at Artifacts, Thinking About History, written by the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies.
