  What’s New

This area of the Black Wings website will change periodically to feature new historical material from the Museum’s Archives and from private collections.

The photographs and biographical reflection below create a glimpse of Tuskegee Airman Lt. Col. Robert “Bob” Ashby. Ashby graduated from pilot training at Tuskegee Army Air Field in 1945 and pursued a successful career in the U.S. Air Force. After 20 years of fighting racial problems as well as enemies of America, Lieutenant Colonel Ashby retired from the Air Force. He began his commercial aviation career in 1965 as a flight operation instructor for United Airlines. In 1973 he became the first black pilot to be hired by Frontier Airlines and is the only Tuskegee Airman to be hired by a scheduled airline.
