"Despite its good intentions, Sarbanes-Oxley has come with a host of costly and undesirable consequences that do little to protect shareholders. The most troubling effect has been on smaller, entrepreneurial firms--the kind that are critical for sustaining growth. Mandatory paperwork and bureaucracy have hit these companies the hardest."

Obama's Hemispheric Priorities

The United States needs to reinforce and strengthen its close ties with its neighbors, Mexico and Canada. The Canadian government has announced that President-elect Barack Obama's first foreign visit will be to the Great North at the invitation of embattled premier Stephen Harper. This week, in his first meeting with a foreign leader since winning the presidency, President-elect Obama met with Mexican president Felipe Calderon. Outgoing president George W. Bush enjoyed close relations with Canada and especially Mexico, as the three countries cooperated in areas ranging from trade to the war in Afghanistan to drug interdiction. President-elect Obama's challenge will be to enhance these ties in the face of political turmoil in Canada and escalating violence and social disarray fueled by drug cartels in Mexico.
