JAN. 3-JAN. 20: INDIANA AREA BEEF MEETINGS

The Indiana Beef Cattle Association and Purdue Extension have set seven area beef meetings. They will be held in January across the state and are open to all beef producers. The meetings will feature information on beef issues, policies and programs. The dates and locations are 12:30 p.m. Jan. 3 at the Cornerstone Hall, Salem; 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at Eagles Nest, Columbia City; 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Morgan County Fairgrounds, Martinsville; Jan. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Shrine Building at the Kosciusko Count Fairgrounds, Warsaw; 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Cass County Fairgrounds, Logansport; 6:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Jennings County Library, North Vernon; and 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Smith Building, Henry County Fairgrounds, New Castle. CONTACT: Liz Maynard, (219) 785-5673, emaynard@purdue.edu

 

JAN. 6: ILLIANA VEGETABLE GROWERS' SCHOOL

Purdue and the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor the Illiana Vegetable Growers' School from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST at Teibel's Restaurant in Schererville. Topics that will be covered are vegetable crop response to simulated drift, grafting tomatoes, Indiana MarketMaker, nitrogen fertilizer rates for pumpkins and sweet corn variety results from 2008. JAN. 6-8: IDENTITY PRESERVED WORKSHOPS

The Indiana Soybean Alliance and Indiana Corn Marketing Council will host three workshops on identity preserved, non-genetically modified and specialty grains opportunities. On Jan. 6 the workshop will be at the White Linen Hall in Portland, on Jan. 7 at the Pines Restaurant in Seymour, and on Jan. 8 at the Beck Agricultural Center in West Lafayette. All workshops are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Purdue agronomists and specialty grains industry representatives will present information in an open discussion format. JAN. 8: GROWING FOR THE MARKET SERIES-IP VIDEO CONFERENCE

The Growing for Market series, a program designed for aspiring and traditional farmers, and offered via Interactive Adobe Connect, will be held at more than 15 sites around Indiana. It will be held from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. on Jan. 8 and continue for five consecutive Thursday evenings. Registration costs $50, which includes reference materials and refreshments, and is due by Jan. 5. Sites include Purdue Extension offices in Bartholomew, Blackford, Clark, Decatur, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Howard, Jennings, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Lake, Monroe, Tipton and Warrick counties. JAN. 12: ENHANCING SUPERVISORY & EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE WEBINAR SERIES

The Enhancing Supervisory and Employee Performance Series, a program about employee management in agriculture operations, is offered via webinar. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 12 and continue for four consecutive Monday mornings. This interactive workshop is designed to help participants meet challenges in farm operations. JAN. 13 – MARCH 3: FOREST MANAGEMENT ON PRIVATE WOODLANDS

The Forest Management for the Private Woodland Owner workshop will be in Martinsville. There will be a meeting from 6 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. each Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on two Saturdays. This workshop is a short course program about personal techniques for managing woodlands. The workshop will run eight consecutive weeks. Registration is due by Jan. 8 and is $99 per person. The fee will cover the cost of instruction, class handouts, course notebook and a tree measuring stick. Class size is limited to 45 registrants. JAN. 13-15: FORT WAYNE FARM SHOW

The Fort Wayne Farm Show will be at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The show will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 13, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 14 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 15. Some of the topics for the sessions will be the grain and livestock market outlook, feeding byproducts of bio-energy, farm leases, emerging technologies in agriculture and property taxes. JAN. 19-21: INDIANA HORTICULTURAL CONGRESS AND TRADE SHOW

The Indiana Horticultural Congress and Trade Show will be at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. Topics to be featured during the educational programs are processing vegetables, fresh vegetables, fruit, grapes and wine, botanicals, agritourism, farm marketing and organics. Sessions will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 19 and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 20. The trade show will be from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 20. JAN. 21-22: MIDWEST ORGANIC PRODUCTION & MARKETING CONFERENCE

The Midwest Organic Production and Marketing Conference and Trade Show, held in conjunction with the Indiana Horticulture Congress, will be at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. The conference will cover topics ranging from composting and cover crops to livestock production and food safety regulation. The program will begin at 8 a.m. Jan. 21 and wrap up with an organic dinner that evening. The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. Early registration, due Jan. 14, costs $95 per person or $85 for the second person from the same family. JAN. 21-22: HEART OF AMERICA GRAZING CONFERENCE

The Heart of America Grazing Conference will be at the Holiday Inn in Columbus. The conference will begin at 4 p.m. on Jan. 21 and will feature the trade show, dinner and a program on Polyface, Inc. The conference and trade show will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 22. Conference sessions include ultra-high stock density grazing, marketing your farm-raised products, using sheep and goats in a grazing environment, economics flexibility in grazing stockers and replacement dairy heifers and alternative forages in grazing operations. JAN. 27 – FEB. 24: MANAGING MARGIN RISK – INTERACTIVE VIDEO CONFERENCE

Managing Margin Risk workshop will feature Purdue Extension specialists via interactive video with five sessions beginning at 7 p.m. The program will provide producers with the tools to determine their breakeven prices, marketing plans, crop insurance decisions and leasing options with the goal of being able to lock in profitable margins. The session dates and topics are Jan. 27 on a new era of margin risk; Feb. 3 on what does the farm bill mean to you; Feb. 10 on current and future pricing alternatives as the local buyer; Feb. 17 on combining crop insurance and marketing strategies; and Feb. 24 on putting it all together in a plan to manage margin risk. Registration is $40 per person and is due by Jan. 9. JAN. 30-31: FARMING TOGETHER WORKSHOP

The Farming Together Workshop on developing the next generation of management will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 30 and from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Jan. 31. The workshop provides information and work time to develop answers for many issues involved with bringing a new manager into the operation. It also provides an opportunity for you and your new partner to begin making decisions together about the farming operation's future. Registration, due by Jan. 15, is $120 per farm. After Jan. 15, registration is $150 per farm. FEB. 4-5: MIDWEST WOMEN IN AG CONFERENCE

The Midwest Women in Agriculture Conference, designed to meet the needs of women in agriculture by addressing personal, family and farm issues that affect their lives, families and farm business, will be at the Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth. The conference will run from 10:30 a.m. Feb. 4 to 3 p.m. Feb. 5. Early registration, due by Jan. 16, costs $75 per person for both days or $65 per person for one day. FEB. 7: PURDUE AGRICULTURE FISH FRY

The Purdue Agricultural Alumni Fish Fry will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The speaker will be veteran political journalist Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC's "The Andrea Mitchell Hour" and chief foreign affairs correspondent for NBC News. The menu will include fish and pork. The fish fry is the annual meeting of the Purdue Agricultural Alumni Association. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased in advance.
