U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosts Engineer Day

PORTLAND, Ore. – Members of the news media are invited to cover the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers’ Engineer Day event in conjunction with National Engineers Week on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005.

Between 9 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., about 130 students from area high schools will participate in this event, designed to educate them about the Corps and the various careers and opportunities engineering has to offer.

The event will begin with introductory remarks from Portland District Engineer, Col. Richard Hobernicht. Corps civilian personnel will then divide the students into small groups to rotate through hands-on applications and presentations, ranging in topics from hydraulic and structural engineering to emergency response (think hurricanes) to computer engineering. One presentation will include information about the Corps’ support for the Global War on Terror, led by Corps employees who deployed to Iraq. There also will be an Opportunities Fair with representatives from local colleges and engineering agencies.

Please call Heidi Helwig at (503) 808-4510 if you are interested in attending all or part of this event.
