Corps of Engineers proposes re-issuing nationwide permits

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently published its proposal to reissue nationwide permits. It is seeking public comment on proposed regional conditions to ensure that impacts authorized by the nationwide permits are minimal.

Nationwide permits are general permits issued on a nationwide basis to streamline the authorization of activities that result in minimal individual and cumulative adverse effects on the aquatic environment.

Within the nationwide permits, Corps districts are authorized to add regional conditions specific to the needs and/or requirements of a particular region or state. Specific regional conditions include, but are not limited to, in-water work windows, upland disposal sites, proper notification in the event of cultural resources or human burial sites are affected, fish passage protection and riparian vegetation protection and restoration.

Affected federal, state and local agencies, Indian tribes and any other interested organizations are asked to provide input to the Corps about the regional conditions for nationwide permits. Written comments must be received by Nov. 14, 2006, and should be addressed to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: CENWP-OP-G (Corrie Veenstra), P.O. Box 2946, Portland Oregon, 97208-2946.

A copy of the complete public notice, including the proposal that was printed in the Federal Register, can be found on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ website at http://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/.
