Corps offers visitors special events at Bonneville Dam

PORTLAND, Ore -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host two events in August at Bonneville Lock and Dam to commemorate Oregon Trail Day and celebrate the return of salmon to the Columbia River.

Oregon Trail Day. A Living History re-enactment of the Oregon Trail decision: “Do we take the Barlow Road, or the river?” will take place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 12, on the 3rd floor of the Bradford Island Visitor Center in the Main Theater. A short movie about the Oregon Trail will follow each presentation.

Salmon Festival. Could you survive everything a salmon goes through during its amazing travels from stream to ocean and back again?

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Bradford Island Visitor Center, the Corps of Engineers will celebrate the annual return of salmon to the Columbia River. Visitors will have an opportunity to act out the life-cycle of a salmon on an educational mini-golf course created by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Salmon films and programs also will be shown throughout the day.

Salmon are an important part of the Columbia River ecosystem and now is a great time to see and learn about their struggles to survive and how the Corps helps. Underwater views of salmon on their way to spawning grounds are visible in the visitor center’s fish ladder daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to these two events, ranger programs, interpretive displays and films at the Bradford Island Visitor Center will be provided throughout the summer to share more stories of the history, science and nature of the Columbia River Gorge and Bonneville Lock and Dam.

To get to Bonneville Lock and Dam, take exit 40 off I-84. For more information about these or other activities at the dam, contact the Visitor Center staff at (541) 374-8820.
