Informational meeting scheduled July 19
PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) that had historically been used for military training. One of these sites, Camp Abbot, is located in Deschutes County, near Bend, Ore.
The Corp will be conducting a Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP), Site Inspection (SI), according to Corps project manager Mike Nelson.“ The SI will be used to determine what future work the Corps may do to clean-up possible munitions related components and chemical constituents used during combat engineer training.” The Corps of Engineers cleans up sites contaminated with hazardous waste, radioactive waste, and/or ordnance to comply with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations.
A public informational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sunriver Resort, Greathall Conference Center, Landmark Rooms I and II, Sunriver, Ore. This meeting will provide the public an overview of the MMRP, SI process and the current work plan.
“The work plan will allow our stakeholders to see exactly the types of activities and locations where work will be done to complete the SI,” Nelson said. “I encourage the public to attend the meeting at the Sunriver Resort where we can answer questions about the work to be performed.”
The SI work will be conducted during August and September by a Corps contractor, Shaw Environmental. The work to be performed will include access to and a visual inspection of property that was part of the former Camp Abbot. The inspection may also include soil and or water sampling.
In preparation to begin the SI work the Corps contacted property owners of the former Camp Abbot site and obtained signed Department of the Army Rights of Entry (ROE) Environmental Investigation and Assessment. “The ROE from a property owner allows the Corps and Corps contract to perform the required work.” Nelson said. “Also, property owners will be contacted within 48-hours prior to any work being done on their property.”
Camp Abbot was constructed in 1942 and served as a training facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed.
