Corps plans Camp Abbot Site Inspection, Public information meeting scheduled for April 4 at Sunriver Resort

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) that had historically been used for military training located within Camp Abbot, located in Deschutes County, near Bend, Ore.

The Corps will do this evaluation by conducting a Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Site Investigation (SI). The SI will be conducted in the next few months by a Corps contractor, Shaw Environmental. The work to be performed will include access to and a visual inspection of property that was part of the former Camp Abbot. The inspection may also include soil and or water sampling.

The SI will be used to determine future work the Corps may do the clean-up of possible Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste. The Corps of Engineers cleans up sites contaminated with hazardous waste, radioactive waste, or ordnance to comply with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations.

In order to begin the SI the Corps will be contacting property owners of the former Camp Abbot site and request the owner to provide a signed Department of the Army Right of Entry Environmental Assessment and Response (ROE).

Additionally, a public informational meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sunriver Resort, located at 1 Center Rd., Sunriver, Ore., to provide the public an overview of the FUDS, MMRP, SI process and ROE request information.

Camp Abbot was constructed in 1942 and served as a training facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed.

More information will be available on the former Camp Abbot as it comes available on Portland District’s website at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pa/fuds/abbott.
