Geology Day activities at Bonneville Lock and Dam

Portland, Ore. -Grab the family or a friend and head out for a rockin' good time at the annual Geology Day celebration Saturday, Aug. 9, at Bonneville Lock and Dam.

The action-packed event will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bradford Island Visitors Center.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Bonneville Lock and Dam park rangers will revisit the rockin', shakin' and slidin' that formed the Columbia River Gorge. The rangers will give demonstrations about the basics of the geology of the Gorge and the Cascade Mountain Range.

Demonstrations, which will be given in sequence, begin with plate tectonics, followed by volcanoes and layers of the gorge. Visitors will receive take home activities and other information pertaining to geology.

Also on Aug. 9, two special presentations will be shown throughout the day in the visitor center’s main theater. Scheduled are: "Message from the Mountain, Mount St. Helens," at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and "Ice Age Floods: Catastrophic Transformation of the West," at noon and 3 p.m.

Visitors to the dam also may want to visit Bonneville Fish Hatchery, home to Herman, a nearly 10-foot-long sturgeon. There also are places to picnic on the grounds of the dam and the hatchery.

The Bradford Island Visitor Center is only accessible from the Oregon side of the Columbia River. Follow Interstate 84 to Exit 40. Bonneville Lock and Dam is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
