Corps proposes removal of landfill at former Troutdale site

Portland, Ore.-A proposal to excavate and remove the entire 1/2 acre landfill at the site of a former building materials testing lab in Troutdale was announced today by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Corps is seeking public comment on the draft Environmental Assessment that addresses impacts involved in the landfill removal. The document is available now for public review and comment at the following website: https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/issues/nwplab/pubs.htm.

A thorough independent investigation and extensive environmental sampling of soils and water on the premises of the Corps' former laboratory revealed low levels of contamination with little or no risk to humans. Agency officials said that cleanup of the site and voluntary removal of the 8,000 cubic yard landfill should eliminate any future concerns or doubts about contamination at that location.

The clean-up effort at the Troutdale site, estimated to cost nearly $1 million, also includes removal of sediments in a concrete sump and of soil surrounding a transformer pad. Cleanup is expected to take several weeks and will begin next summer.

The public is invited to comment on the document through Feb. 3. For more information, call Mike Gross, Environmental Engineer at (503) 808-4913 or visit the website listed above.
