Portland, Ore.--The Dalles Dam will host its 13th annual Open House on April 28, 2001, as part of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in The Dalles, Oregon.
The Open House at this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' hydropower project will feature free guided boat rides. The one-hour boat trips to the navigation lock will leave from The Dalles Boat Basin aboard the 58-foot utility boat "Randy S. Cummings" on the hour beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until 5 p.m. (exit 85 off Interstate 84).
Also featured from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be free train rides leaving every 30 minutes from the visitor center at Seufert Park (exit 87 off Interstate 84). Balloons and refreshments will be provided. This trip includes a guided tour of the powerhouse during which visitors will have an inside look at a generator and the control room, and view a PowerPoint generator demonstration. An additional stop at the east fish ladder will provide a close-up view inside the fish counting room for a look at this year's record salmon run.
Volunteers at the navigation lock will explain how the locks and nearby five megawatt auxiliary water supply channel turbine works.
