News media invited to cover science and engineering open house

Portland, Ore.--The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will help more than 150 students discover the exciting worlds open to them through education. From 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., on Feb. 22, in its downtown offices at 333 S.W. First Ave., the Corps’ Portland District and its sponsoring partner, the Society of American Military Engineers, will host a Science and Engineering Open House to celebrate National Engineers Week.

The open house will provide a broad look at science and engineering. A number of local architect-engineer firms and regional universities will staff informational booths that would appeal to both high school and college students. As an exciting highlight, the A-E firms and the Corps will accept resumes from students for possible summer, temporary or entry level positions.

Other portions of the open house will allow students to learn about geotechnical engineering, fluid modeling, structural engineering, fisheries improvements, computer engineering, hydroelectric design and emergency response. A time also will be set aside for students to actively participate in some hands-on demonstrations.

If you would like to cover some or this entire event, please let the Public Affairs Office know by Feb. 20 by calling (503) 808-4510.

The SAME is an organization committed to advancing the knowledge of the science of military engineering and to help develop positive relationships between the engineering profession in civil life and that in the military service.

The Corps of Engineers is made up of about 34,600 civilian and 650 military men and women, nationwide. Our military and civilian engineers, scientists and other specialists work hand in hand as leaders in engineering and environmental matters. Our diverse workforce of biologists, engineers, geologists, hydrologists, natural resource managers and other professionals meets the demands of changing times and requirements as a vital part of America's Army.

Editor’s Note: students from the Portland, Clackamas and Vancouver school districts will attend the open house.
