Data Source: http://www2.mvr.usace.army.mil/nic2/reports/icerpt.0600 ******************************************************************* Current conditions as of January 13: Arctic high pressure has overtaken the Upper Midwest and bitterly cold temperatures were observed this morning...ranging from about 15 to 20 below near Minneapolis Minnesota to the mid and upper teens above zero down south around St Louis Missouri. As of yet...river ice conditions on the Mississippi and the Illinois have not changed too much since last week at this time...but the surge of extremely low temperatures expected over the next few days may have a significant impact for the upcoming week. Please see the table above for details of the reported conditions as of January 13. Outlook for next 7 days: As mentioned above...a surge of extremely cold air is pushing further south today...and it will be reinforced by another Arctic blast which is forecast for Wednesday into Thursday of this week. Overnight lows for both this Wednesday and Thursday will be down near 20 below once again in Minneapolis and only around zero as far south as St Louis. Then...a recovery to near normal or even a little above normal is predicted to occur by next Sunday or Monday. Normal highs this time of year go from 21 up north in Minneapolis Minnesota to about 37 down south in St Louis Missouri... while lows run from about 3 to 21 respectively. Based on these predicted air temperatures...there clearly should be some significant new/additional ice production this week... especially the further north you go. This somewhat quick introduction of dramatically colder air...especially into the areas in Iowa.. Missouri..and Illinois...may have the additional complications of producing ice jams and blockages of flow which could produce localized flooding in areas above the jams and loss of water/flow below the jams. The NCRFC will keep a close watch for signs of this happening and issue forecasts as needed. The next Ice Statement will be released on Tuesday..Jan 20 2009. ...dam... $$ NNNN
