2009 Benefits Open Enrollment Through November 7, 2008

What's New for 2009

Purdue 500 out-of-network coinsurance increases

The employee’s coinsurance for all out-of-network care under the Purdue 500 plan will increase to 50 percent for 2009.  For 2008, some out-of-network services have had a 30 percent employee coinsurance.  The UnitedHealthcare network now used by the Purdue 500 requires 50 percent coinsurance on all out-of-network claims.  The higher employee coinsurance encourages use of providers who have agreed to be part of the UHC network.

The break point for the medical plan premium tiers changes to $40,000

For many years, Purdue’s medical plans have had lower employee premiums for those earning less than a particular annual amount.  In recent years, that amount has been $38,000, but it will increase to $40,000 for 2009.  Employees who are earning between $38,000 and $39,999 in January 2009 will move from the higher tier to the lower one, resulting in a lower premium.

Remember that any employee whose Purdue pay increases to $40,000 or more will move to the higher medical premium tier immediately when the pay increase goes into effect.  So, for example, a July raise taking the employee’s pay to $40,000 or more will bring a July medical premium increase as well.

We’re going greener

Purdue is taking a greener approach to enrollment for dental and pre-paid legal coverage.  Rather than providing paper enrollment kits for these coverages, Staff Benefits is directing people to this Web site for information and forms

For the most part, people who are interested in these benefits are already participating.  And participants who want to continue their same coverage do not need to complete any paperwork, so a relatively small number of people actually need the enrollment materials.
