PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Agribusiness Education Training and Incubation (AETI) program seeks to serve both new and existing agriculture businesses in Hawaii, with an emphasis on Native Hawaiian owned businesses in an effort to build Hawaii's diversified agricultural market.

The AETI program is supported by a grant which involves a nine campus consortium, which also supports training and education. The consortium goals and objectives stated in the grant are as follows:

Goal 1: Education and Workforce Development

  • Sustain educational priorities directly related to development of agricultural and food science competence at several UH campuses.

  • Build educational capacities in areas of agriculture, aquaculture, biotechnology, marine science, ethnobotany, native nutrition, forestry, culinary arts, etc.

  • Provide technical business and general industry workforce training, with entrepreneurship focus.

  • Emphasize meaningful connections between subject content and environment, with special emphasis on Hawaiian culture.

Goal 2: Business and Community Economic Development Assistance

  • Identify and prioritize development opportunities in Hawaii communities.

  • Provide microbusiness support solutions for agricultural projects in progress and new startups.

  • Seek additional resources from federal, state and local sources to assist agribusinesses to succeed.

  • Help struggling businesses achieve profitability in a cooperative environment (among grant partners), with emphasis on Native Hawaiian owned businesses.

Goal 3: Market and Capacity Building
  • Help establish local markets for local production and consumption in Hawaii.
  • Collaborate with market professionals to develop local and overseas (i.e., mainland U.S. and international) markets for Hawaiian products.
  • Work with computer faculty/specialists to develop sophisticated consortium-wide Internet marketing, inventory, distribution and financial applications.
  • Emphasize development of minority-owned businesses, including those owned by Native Hawaiians.
