Sustainable Solutions and Green Lodging Practices

All proceeds from Arbor Day Farm and Lied Lodge & Conference Center encourage sustainable development practices around the globe and promote conservation and healthier communities through tree planting. These are just a few of the ways we’re thinking green:

  • Building Construction

The Douglasfir timbers in the Lied Lodge lobby were plantation-grown in Oregon on lands that utilize forest stewardship management plans.

  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning

Our unique bio-mass heating and cooling system uses renewable firewood. No CFCs are used for air conditioning.

  • Fireplaces

All six of our clean-burning, all-masonry fireplaces are engineered to burn away virtually all smoke, surpassing EPA requirements for wood burning particulate emissions.

  • Windows

The wood trim windows are argon-filled, double-coated, low-E, insulated glass.

  • Lamps and Fixtures

We use energy-efficient, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) whenever possible. Custom lampshades throughout the facility are made from handmade paper.

  • Plumbing

Low-flow, water-conserving plumbing fixtures are installed throughout the facility.

  • Linen and Towel Reuse Program

Guests of Lied Lodge are given the option of having linens and towels replaced daily or indicating that housekeeping can skip a day of laundering. This program helps save thousands of gallons of water and significantly reduces energy costs each year.

  • Detergents

The cleaning and laundry products used by our housekeeping staff are Green Seal certified to contribute to a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for guests and staff. They contain no toxic chemicals, no ozone depleting compounds, no hazardous waste characteristics, no phosphates, and no carcinogens.

  • Recycling

Comprehensive recycling systems are found throughout Lied Lodge, including in guest rooms, offices, public areas, and meeting rooms.

  • Office Supplies

Recycled or environmentally preferred office supplies are purchased whenever possible. Our copy machines are stocked with recycled copy paper containing a minimum of 35% post-consumer content.

  • Hybrid Vehicles

Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles are used to shuttle guests and to transport employees.

  • Conference Rooms

The podiums and risers in our conference rooms are made from a unique building material, Environ. This non-toxic product is made from a mixture of recycled newspapers and soy flour. The conference table pads are made from Rhinolin®, a patented product made from all-natural materials, and completely biodegradable.

  • Coffee

Lied Lodge proudly serves fair trade, shade-grown Arbor Day Gourmet Coffee, part of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Rain Forest Rescue® program. The shade-grown coffee beans mature slowly under the canopy of the Maya Rain Forest. Our support goes to the indigenous farmers there who vigilantly protect their rain forest lands from commercial development that can result in our Earth’s precious rain forests being burned and bulldozed.

  • Conference Attendee Name Tags

Conference attendees have the option of leaving their name badges behind for reuse or recycling.

  • Smoke-Free

Lied Lodge guest rooms offer a smoke-free environment.

  • Fitness Center Locker Rooms

Bulk shampoo and soap dispensers are provided to conserve on consumption of single use products.

  • Environmental Partnerships

The Arbor Day Foundation partners with many environmentally conscious organizations including The Audubon Society, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Milliken, National Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, and Toyota.

  • Landscape

Over 50 species of trees and shrubs are showcased in the Lied Lodge Parking Lot Arboretum. We maintain the grounds with minimal use of herbicides and pesticides. For winter de-icing, we use coarsely ground cherry pits instead of salt.

  • Orchards

Arbor Day Farm has 180 antique apple trees, representing 165 different varieties. Here you can find both a living record of some of the finest known apples as well as a genetic repository that may one day help create varieties well suited to a changing climate. The orchards use Integrated Pest Management (IPM), relying primarily on non-chemical means (controlling climate, food sources, and building entry points) to prevent and manage pest infestation. Pesticides are used only as a last resort when pests fail to succumb to more conservative methods.

  • Stream Bioengineering

Living trees and shrubs help stabilize the stream banks of South Table Creek through a variety of stream bioengineering techniques. These biotechnical stream-bank protection techniques improve wildlife habitat, reduce erosion, filter storm water runoff, keep the stream cleaner, and enhance aesthetics.

  • Windbreaks

Windbreaks slow the wind, help retain moisture, protect valuable topsoil, and serve as corridors for wildlife. Farmstead and field windbreaks are both visible demonstrations at Arbor Day Farm.

  • Hazelnut Research Field

The nation’s second largest hazelnut research field is located on nine acres of gently sloping land just north of Lied Lodge. This unique woody perennial field is showing the way to better food production, environmental health, and innovative agro-forestry practices. In 2006, the Lied Greenhouse produced the largest number of hazelnut seedlings, grown from hazelnuts, in the world.

  • Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits, cider, and vegetables grown on Arbor Day Farm are served in the Lied Lodge Timber Dining Room, providing the freshest options for our guests and greatly reducing the need for food transportation.

  • Living Snow Fence

This natural snow fence of woody decorative florals provides year-round wind protection, saves money on snow removal, and supplies food and cover for wildlife. It incorporates small fruit crops, decorative woody florals (like cardinal dogwood and pussy willow) and hazelnuts. In spring, cuttings are sold to local florists and used for arrangements in Lied Lodge.
