  • 2011 Roe-D-Hoe Title Goes to IOWWA Champion Casey Mallon

Casey Mallon of Iowa [left] came out on top in the 2011 NOWRA National Backhoe Roe-D-Hoe, held Saturday, March 5, at the Pumper Show in Louisville, KY. Casey beat 10 other tough competitors in the finals, earning the title of 2011 National Roe-D-Hoe Champion and the $1,000 first prize. As the winner of the IOWWA Roe-D-Hoe competition held in January, Casey was automatically entered in the finals. The ten other finalists won the right to compete in the finals by having the 10 best scores out of the nearly 200 competitors who tried their luck during the open competition held the previous two days. Josh Reading of Illinois [right] finished second, winning $400, and Tim Boswell of West Virginia [center] took home third place and a $100 award. See more pictures from the Roe-D-Hoe here

NOWRA captured most of the finals on video, and you can watch it on YouTube. You can also watch a short video showing the booths of NOWRA's BBP partners exhibiting at the Pumper Show.

The 2011 NOWRA National Backhoe Roe-D-Hoe sponsors included Jet, Inc., Bio-Microbics, Inc., Infiltrator Systems, Inc., Norweco, and Presby Environmental, Inc. Who We Are

The National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (NOWRA) is the largest organization within the U.S. dedicated solely to educating and representing members within the onsite and decentralized industry. NOWRA headquarters are located in Alexandria, Virginia, with constituent local groups throughout the U.S. and Canada.

What We Do

Providing education and training programs to professionals within this industry, to policy officials, the public, and system owners is the driving force to the work of this organization. Through education, we provide a leadership role in state and federal legislative initiatives to protect water quality and public health. NOWRA’s most prominent initiative at this time is the development of a model performance code for use by states and local regulators.

Why We Are Needed

Onsite systems provide wastewater treatment to homes, businesses and industrial centers. This service sector is one of the fastest growing markets within the U.S., Canada, Australia and Eastern Europe. Onsite systems support the municipal wastewater treatment infrastructure. They provide services in urban and rural areas and effectively solve problems found in unusual situations and difficult locations.

In this era of fiscal limitations, many cities and towns have difficulties addressing the high costs to expand the capacity of their wastewater treatment facilities or extend lines to urban areas to accommodate growth. As a result, onsite systems now provide more than 40% of the wastewater treatment services to residential areas, communities, shopping centers and commercial businesses throughout the U.S.

Onsite systems are an effective solution to protecting water quality. They are valuable component to integrate with watershed management plans and implementing sustainable development concepts. The recycling component in this system supports the water resources management goals in many arid areas of the Country. NOWRA’s framework defines how it will implement programs and plans to achieve these goals.
