Highlights and Success Stories
As interest in profitable alternatives in agriculture
continues to build, so does the SARE program. Results from SARE's research
are directly applicable to farms, ranches and rural communities across the
nation. Many farmers and ranchers cooperating on SARE grants have realized
new ways to make money - while protecting the environment and improving
quality of life in their communities.
To inform farmers and others about some of the most innovative SARE projects,
we've assembled a sampling of success stories and agricultural profiles
that bring to life the many diverse sustainable principles practiced coast
to coast.

The
New American Farmer
This SARE publication collects in-depth interviews with farmers and ranchers
to describe sustainable farm operations around the country. In addition
to describing successful farming practices, the features in The New American
Farmer detail the effects of those practices on farm profitability, quality
of life, rural communities and the environment.
Ten Years of
SARE
Since 1988, USDA's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE)
program has made great strides toward increasing scientific understanding
and promoting practical uses to manage sustainable agriculture systems.
Ten Years of SARE showcases
the accomplishments of a unique USDA program that has made a difference
in the lives of farmers and ranchers across the United States and Island
Protectorates. This publication, which features 40 stories about SARE
grant projects, was researched and written in 1997 and 1998 when the SARE
program was approaching its 10th anniversary.
SARE and NRCS - Conservation Partners
SARE is working to identify new partnership
opportunities with the Natural Resource Conservation Service, as land
stewardship and resource conservation are of paramount importance to both
SARE and NRCS. Many farmers who have received NRCS incentive or cost-share
payments also have received SARE grants, and some of their successes are
highlighted as Featured Topics.
Other Success Stories
In every SARE Outreach publication, we highlight successful farmers and
ranchers. There are thousands of ways to farm more sustainably. Read
about dozens of such farmers and ranchers. See also the full list
of SARE Publications or the list of publications by topic.
