Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
CDC and the Government of Botswana began a partnership in 1995 to strengthen
TB control through public health research. With the launch of the CDC Global
AIDS Program (GAP) office in 2000 the partnership grew to include HIV/AIDS
prevention, care and treatment programs to maximize the quality, coverage and
impact of Botswana's own national response. In Botswana, this CDC-Government of
Botswana partnership is known as BOTUSA (Botswana-U.S. Partnership). Working
with Government of Botswana ministries, international agencies and community and
faith-based organizations, CDC provides training and technical assistance,
promotes innovation and evidence-based best practices, and supports targeted
public health evaluation and program monitoring.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Botswana was designated a focus country of the initiative and CDC GAP Botswana became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
