Kansas SARE is funded by a grant from the North Central Region SARE office. The annual grant finances sustainable agriculture education and outreach within the state. For 2008, the Kansas SARE program has prioritized water quality, agritourism, integrated systems, small-scale food processing and small acreage program development.
In a 2007 survey, 60 percent of Kansas Extension Agents indicated attending in-service professional development workshops that incorporate hands-on training and field/farm tours to be extremely or very useful. 2008 in-service trainings have integrated all aspects of farm and land management with in-field and hands-on experiences.
The Kansas SARE coordinator works with an advisory committee to assess needs in the state, then writes and executes a Plan of Work. An annual report documents progress in implementing the Plan of Work.
Jana Beckman assumed the role of the Kansas SARE Coordinator for the North Central Region SARE program in 2002. She facilitates SARE-supported educator professional development in sustainable agriculture in Kansas, and promotes other SARE research and education opportunities. Jana earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Agronomy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before joining K-State Research and Extension in 2001, as the Coordinator of the Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Crops.
