Bringing Us All Together: The 101st Annual Meeting of the OAH

Friday, March 28 to Monday, March 31, 2008
Hilton New York

The one-hundredth and first annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians will be held in New York City, answering a call to bring us all together. The last generation or so of scholarship in American history has excavated the experiences and concerns of a wide array of Americans. Our field now advances a far more expansive definition than ever before of what it means to live an American life. We not only know about people of many genders and races, we see class and region as integral dimensions of American identity. Scholars writing in languages other than English and living outside the United States are also valued members of the community of American historians.

The 43-story New Yorker Hotel was built in 1929 and opened its doors on January 2, 1930. At the time, it was the largest hotel in New York with 2,500 rooms. In addition to the ballrooms there were ten private dining "salons" and five restaurants employing 35 master cooks. During the Big Band era, the New Yorker hosted the most famous bands of the day, including Benny Goodman, both of the Dorsey's and Woody Herman.
The New Yorker Hotel features an excellent location near Madison Square Garden, Penn Station, and Macy's and has two onsite restaurants: Cooper's Tavern and the Tick Tock Diner (open 24 hours, 7 days per week).

The Hotel Pennsylvania is located in the heart of midtown Manhattan, directly opposite Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. Built in 1919 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, Hotel Pennsylvania is one of New York City's largest hotels.
The hotel is famous not only for its grandeur but also for its place in the world of entertainment. The renowned Cafe Rouge Ballroom played host to many of the Big Band Era's greats, including the Dorsey Brothers, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra -- which forever immortalized the hotel and its phone number in the 1940 hit "Pennsylvania 6-5000". New York's Hotel Pennsylvania has had the same phone number since 1919.
