Briefly

Dennis Brown is a regional economist in the Rural Economy Branch. His research focuses on rural development. Recent work has involved analyzing the economic effects of a variety of developmental strategies, including rural recreation/tourism, transportation, and the rural dimensions of sprawl.

Background

Prior to his current position, Dennis investigated how specific food processing industries could more effectively create rural economic growth. Several projects focused on the red meat and poultry processing industries, which were important sources of nonmetro employment growth during the 1980's. Before joining ERS in 1990, Dennis worked on agricultural worker issues at the U.S. Department of Labor.

Education

Dennis has a Ph.D. in economic geography from the University of Maryland (College Park), an M.A. in Regional Science from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.A. in urban geography from the University of Windsor (Canada).

Dennis is a member of the Association of American Geographers.
