Today in the Department of Defense, Sept. 23-25, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen is in Washington through the weekend.

Secretary Cohen hosts a full honors arrival ceremony for the minister of defense of the Netherlands on Monday, Sept. 25, at 3:30 p.m. A media availability will follow at 4:45 p.m. See the advisory for details.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is in Washington through the weekend. There are no public or media events on his schedule.

Croatian Phiblex 2000, a bilateral landing and maneuver ashore exercise, begins Sept. 25 and continues through Sept. 29 in Croatia. See the news release for details.

Secretary Cohen will speak on "Assuring American Security in the 21st Century" at the Mid-America Club in Chicago on Sept. 26. See the advisory for details.

The next Department of Defense news briefing will be Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 1:30 p.m. in the Pentagon briefing studio, room 2E781. The briefer will be Kenneth H. Bacon, assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

MEDFLAG 00-2, a joint/combined medical training and civil assistance exercise in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, continues through Sept. 26. See the news release and the European Command web page for details. [Link no longer available.]

Fifteen U.S. military athletes are competing as members of the U.S. Olympic team in the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia, through Oct. 1. See the news release for details.
