Today in the Department of Defense, March 10-12, 2001

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz are in Washington this weekend. There are no public or media events on their schedules.

The Navy will commission the guided missile destroyer Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Norfolk, Va. For more information see the DoD news release and the ship's Web page.

A memorial service for 18 Virginia Air Guard members who died in the March 3 aircraft accident in Georgia will be conducted on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Virginia Beach, Va. See the news release for details. [link no longer available]

Two memorial services for the three Florida National Guard members soldiers who died in the March 3 aircraft accident will be conducted on Sunday in Florida. See the news release for details. [link no longer available]

The 43rd World Military Ski Championships ends Sunday in Jericho and Stowe, Vermont. See the championships Web site for details. [link no longer available]

The court of inquiry appointed to investigate the collision between USS Greeneville (SSN 772) and the Ehime Maru continues Monday at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. See the Pacific Fleet Web page for details (page no longer available).

The next regular DoD news briefing will be held Tuesday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. in the DoD briefing studio, Pentagon room 2E781. The briefer will be Rear Adm. Craig R. Quigley, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.
