MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


The sixth annual Navy Environmental and Natural Resources Program Managers' Conference will be held November 29 - December 1, 1994 at the Omni Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia.

Topics will include environmental challenges facing the Navy, issues and initiatives in EPA Regions III and IV, Marine Corps environmental awareness program, nuclear propulsion program, and environmental issues from a political perspective.

Guest speakers will include Secretary of Natural Resources for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Becky Norton Dunlop; Deputy Assistant Secretary of Navy (Installations and Environment), Elsie Munsell; Director, Environmental Protection, Safety and Occupational Health, Rear Admiral Luther F. Schriefier; and Commander Naval Base Norfolk, Rear Admiral Paul D. Moses.

On November 29, 1994, at 4:00 p.m., Sherri W. Goodman, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense (Environmental Security) will present the 1994 Secretary of the Navy Resource, Recovery and Recycling Awards to the following Navy and Marine Corps commands:

Large Installation Category: Medium Installation Category:

1. Naval Base, Norfolk, Virginia 1. Naval Station, Long Beach, California

2. Marine Corps Base, Camp 2. NAS Whidbey Island, Washington

Lejuene, North Carolina 3. Marine Corps Ground Combat

3. Naval Station, San Diego, California Center, Twentynine Palms, California

Small Installation Category:

1. Naval Security Group Activity, Chesapeake, Virginia

2. Marine Corps Logistics Base, Blount Island Command, Jacksonville, Florida

Awards will also be given to commands in the following select categories:

Curbside Recycling: NAS, Whidbey Island, Washington

Recycling Centers: Naval Station, San Diego, California

Community Involvement: Naval Station, Mayport, Florida

Program Scope: NAS, North Island, San Diego, California

Program Innovations: Naval Station, San Diego, California, and

Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia

Program Cost Effectiveness: NAS, Jacksonville, Florida

Program Publicity and Marketing: Marine Corps Air Group Combat Center, Twentynine

Palms, California
