What is the responsibility of the Office of the Inspector
General?
A: The Office of the Inspector General was created to identify
waste, mismanagement and fraud in government spending. The Inspector
General will ensure the accountability and integrity of every
state agency that receives state funding.
Who does the Inspector General report to?
A: The Inspector General reports directly to the Governor.
What projects has the Office of the Inspector General
completed?
A:
The Inspector General will provide periodic reports to the
Governor and will issue a public annual report to the Governor
and Legislature. Public reports from the Inspector General's

How do I report a complaint to the Office of the Inspector
General?
A:
Complaints should be made in writing and can be mailed to the
New Jersey
Office of the Inspector General, P.O. Box 208, Trenton, NJ,
08625-0208; faxed to (609) 984-3990; or submitted
electronically through the Office of the Inspector General web site.
What happens when the OIG receives a
complaint?
A:
The Office of the Inspector General will review and make a
determination
if the complaint should be fielded by
this office or another agency. The priority of the Office of
the Inspector General are cases that have the greatest potential
impact on and benefit for the state. If in fact the Office
initiates an investigation, all parties involved will be notified.
The
Inspector General will report findings with recommendations for
corrective or remedial action when warranted to the Governor.
The Inspector General will monitor the implementation of its
recommendations and refer matters for further civil, criminal
and administrative action to the appropriate authorities.
Does the Office of the Inspector General prosecute crime?
A:
No. The Inspector General will refer complaints alleging criminal
conduct to the Attorney General or other appropriate
prosecutorial authority. If, during the course of an OIG investigation,
criminal conduct is uncovered, the IG will also refer that
conduct to an appropriate authority.
How
was the Office of the Inspector General created?
A:
The Office of the Inspector General was created by Executive Order No. 7 issued by Acting Governor Richard Codey on November 29, 2004. Legislation making this office permanent was passed on July 1, 2005.
