Importance of Culture Confirmation of Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli Infection as Illustrated by Outbreaks of Gastroenteritis --- New York and North Carolina, 2005 - MMWR Article - September 29
Escherichia coli O157:H7 and other strains of E. coli that produce Shiga toxin are collectively known as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The current outbreak of STEC O157 infections associated with eating fresh spinach illustrates the importance of obtaining isolates to identify the source of the infections.

Botulism Health Alert Advisory

Update: Foodborne Botulism toxin Type A associated with bottled carrot juice – Florida and Georgia - Health Alert Advisory - September 29
Two events of foodborne botulism have been caused by the same commercial brand of carrot juice. Three residents of Georgia consumed commercially produced carrot juice from the same bottle. All sought medical care on September 8, 2006, and all three were intubated. Clinical specimens from all three case-patients yielded botulinum toxin type A. High levels of botulinum toxin type A were identified in remnant carrot juice in the bottle from which they drank.
