NEW YORK CITY, Oct. 17, 2000 – More than $22,000 will be available next year to the children of active duty and retired members through the Cmdr. William S. Stuhr Scholarship Fund.
Scholarships for 2001 will be presented to one recipient from each of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, the fund's board of trustees recently announced. Each of the five scholarships will be for $4,500 divided equally over four years. January 2001 will mark the 36th anniversary of the Stuhr Fund, the only privately supported, international scholarship fund that provides financial assistance to family members of the five services. The 20 current scholarship recipients are studying at 20 universities in 14 states. During the next four years, the fund is committed to awarding a cumulative $90,000 in scholarships, according to Joseph LaRiviere, the fund's executive director. To be eligible, scholarship applicants must: o Be a 2001 high school senior. o Be ranked in the top 10 percent of his or her class in their junior and first half of senior year. o Be active in extracurricular activities. o Demonstrate strong leadership potential. o Be a bona fide dependent of an active duty or retired military member of any rank. o Plan to attend a four-year accredited college. o Be prepared to attend the fund's scholarship awards function in May or June 2001.
