Explore Geology

EarthScope

The National Science Foundation has funded a massive project called EarthScope to examine the movement of the North American tectonic plate. This project has 3 main aspects of data gathering: Seismic stations (USArray), Plate Boundary Observatories (PBO), and a deep core/at depth observatory in the San Andreas Fault zone (SAFOD).

It has been said, "EarthScope is to the science of understanding the North American Plate as the Hubbell Telescope is to understanding our Universe."

This website has been created to provide information and contacts to educators, students, scientists, and the general public, with regard to the National Park Service (NPS); cooperative involvement in EarthScope.

This website offers the general principles of the EarthScope project and their importance in exploring the structure, dynamics, and geologic history of the North American continent. The data analysis and discoveries of the project may be interpreted at the park when possible and may offer inspiration in the involvement in Earth sciences. The project conveys the collaboration of scientists, educators, students, and the public in creating a comprehensive picture of how our landscape changes with physical processes, which affect us all.

The NPS Geology website offers tools and links to sites of exploration in Earth science to assist in better understanding of our world. All are invited to inquire about park participation in EarthScope. The national effort is to help all of us in understanding our local environment and culture within the dynamics of the larger Earth system.
