Who We Are

Overview

The Natural Sounds Program Office, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, is a detached unit of the National Park Service’s (NPS) Washington Office Division of Natural Resources. The program currently resides within the Air Resources Division of the National Park Service.

The NPS Natural Sounds Program Office was established in 2000 to help parks manage sounds in a way that balances the various expectations of park visitors with the protection of park resources. The Natural Sound Program addresses sound related matters raised by Congress, NPS Management Policies, and NPS Directors Orders. The general mission of the Sound Program is to provide assistance, coordination, guidance and a consistent approach to addressing sound related activities with respect to park resources and visitor use. An important element of this mission is working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to implement the National Parks Air Tour Management Act (NPATMA) wherein Congress mandated that FAA and NPS jointly develop Air Tour Management Plans (ATMP’s) for more than 130 parks where commercial air tours operate. The program also provides technical assistance to parks in the form of acoustic monitoring, data collection and analysis, and developing acoustic baseline information for planning and reporting purposes.
