Get Attention
- You can use Google Earth to display non-geographic images onto the globe.
- Here are two examples (Give them a spin):
-
The Menlo Park & Santa Cruz CMG Staff

-
Open House 2006 Dress Like a Marine Geologist

Locate Facilities
-
Locate and view CMG Facilities such as
the CMG Program Office; Woods Hole Campus; MOF;
St. Petersburg Campus; O'Brien; Menlo Park Campus;
MarFac; Pacific Science Center, Santa Cruz.

Overlay Maps
- Overlay maps from various scales and themes.
- Overlaying, fading, zooming, and tilting the maps provides new perspectives and relationships.
- For example:
- Access is provided through the
link near the top of InfoBank pages.
|
Track Lines
- See where the vessel or vehicle went.
- Often their paths indicate the purpose and problems encountered.
- For example:
|
Sample Points
- See where sampling has been done.
- For example:
|
Event Times
- Any label can be associated geographic location.
- For example, navigation points can be displayed with their time.
(in InfoBank's case we format them as YYYYDDDHHMMSST)
- For ease of use, we group every 100 points together into KML folders,
then have an "index" group of every 100th point.
- We use the index group to narrow down our time sequence of interest,
then display the appropriate "every point" folder to see details.
- A Virtual Globe's interactive pan and zoom capability
(often simultaneously displayed with other data)
is very useful in identifying data problems and events.
|
Display Additional Information
- HTML pages can be incorporated to display related information such as metadata and imagery
- For example:
|
Thematic Collections
- Collections of Field Activities within InfoBank are available for use with Google Earth.
- Examples of groupings by theme include:
- Access is provided through the
links near the top of InfoBank Activity pages.
|
Follow Track Lines
- The "Play Tour" feature within Google Earth can be used to "fly" data sets, such as vessel track lines and flight lines.
- You can set the angle of view, speed and other options to simulate or enhance the tour.
- For example:
