Environmental Leadership

Environmental efforts include the responsibility for ensuring that all applicable environmental laws and regulations are addressed in the planning and design of the Radiological Laboratory/Utility/Office Building and the Nuclear Facility. These efforts also include working with the Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration, the New Mexico Environment Department, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Los Alamos National Laboratory subject-matter experts to coordinate permits for air, water, and waste emissions and effluents and to ensure ongoing compliance.

CMRR wins three 2008 Pollution Prevention Awards

Among other environmental awards, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Project won a 2007 Pollution Prevention Award from LANL for its efforts at reusing/recycling materials from the RLUOB and is actively pursuing opportunities for additional savings with the NF.

NNSA Environmental Stewardship Award

Recycling of Soil, Asphalt, and Mulch
The Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Project reusing soil, asphalt, and mulch from vegetation instead of paying for their disposal. Approximately 207,000 cubic yards of soil and 486 cubic yards of asphalt will be used at the Laboratory and at the Los Alamos County landfill. Trees and other vegetation will be turned into mulch to help with dust suppression. Total cost avoidance could be up to $1,735,000.

LANL Pollution Prevention Award

CMRR Facility Green Team
CMRR Division formed a “Green Team” to implement pollution prevention and waste minimization projects within the division. The team meets biweekly to brainstorm, and they have implemented more than 20 of their ideas.

CMRR Facility Project Nuclear Facility LEED Certification
The team is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the new Radiological Laboratory/Utility/Office Building. The team plans to also pursue LEED certification for the Nuclear Facility. These efforts will reduce operational costs of both buildings.
