Mentoring Program

Building Dynamic Mentoring Connections

Mentoring—What’s in it for me?

Mentors

A Mentor is one who is passionate about working for the Forest Service, has technical and agency knowledge, good people skills, and is able to teach others while being considerate and patient.

The Region 5 Mentoring Program is structured to be a formal partnership. The formal support is comprehensive and includes a facilitated matching process, formal mentoring training, an established tracking system, and clear goals for measuring success.

The purpose of the Mentoring Program is to transfer organizational knowledge and to develop needed skills at all levels. The program is also designed to help employees achieve their personal and career goals. These goals will be accomplished through a personalized interactive action plan and an agreement between a Mentor and a Mentoree that matches experience with the desire of the Mentoree to learn new skills.

By participating in the program you will gain exposure and access to employees and leaders at different levels throughout the Agency. You will gain an understanding of our organizational values, relationships and unwritten rules. Participants report an increase in their professional, technical, personal and managerial skills and a deeper understanding of the Region Five culture.

Mentors will be hand-selected individuals that have demonstrated outstanding competencies and skills in their respective fields. You will be matched with a mentor who can serve as a confidential source of information as well as a sounding board or source of advice and knowledge. A Mentor is someone who can assist you in problem solving or provide organizational guidance and help you understand the Forest Service culture.
