Welcome
The Women's Memorial Foundation Office of History & Collections stands ready to help you understand the rich history and culture of America's military women. Our mission is to collect, preserve, document, analyze, and make available the history of women’s service in and with the US Armed Forces, beginning with the American Revolution to the present.
Although women have always volunteered in defense of our nation, many of their contributions have been forgotten and are not recorded in today’s history books. We collect official and personal records, oral histories, photographs, and other memorabilia to help portray women’s record of service and citizenship.
Our actively growing collections include a library of nearly 1,000 books by and about military women, photograph and document archives, personal and military-issue artifacts, memoirs and oral histories. These considerable resources allow us to serve as a leading educational resource on women in US military history.

These web pages are divided into four main categories:
- Collections, highlighting photographs, documents, textiles, artifacts and audiovisuals available for research;
- Exhibits, featuring selected visuals from the many special and permanent exhibits currently on display at the Women’s Memorial;
- History, offering an overview of the history of women who have served in or with the US Armed Forces and resources for further study; and
- Oral History, providing a how-to guide, consent forms and a finding aid for those interested in the oral history program as well as excerpts from the hundreds of oral histories in our collections.
