Letter From The Editor

We are coming to the end of the holiday season and many of our patients are starting to think about what they will do for their health in the new year. Some of them have asked for exercise equipment or gadgets as a holiday gift, and others have decided to sign up for a weight loss program. A quick scan of TV advertising shows only a small amount of "diet and exercise" commercials but you can bet that on December 26th the number of those ads will increase dramatically.

This week we have some information that you will want to share with your patients so that they can achieve long term success. Item #8, Extending Patients' Lives by Five Years, shows that engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each week can extend life up to five years longer. Item #11, Insulin the Cause of Obesity, looks at how high levels of insulin may be responsible for obesity rather than the other way around, and Item #4, Maintaining Weight Loss as Important as Losing, looks at reasons that keeping the weight off is valuable.

Most importantly, our own Dr. Sheri Colberg, has prepared a feature that you will want to give to each and every one of your patients. Losing Weight Is the Easy Part: How to Keep It Off for Good puts everything in perspective and ties in to each of the ideas mentioned in the items above.
