The numerous streams, lakes, reservoirs, varied topography, climates and vegetation of the Kootenai National Forest provide habitats for an abundance of native fish and wildlife species, including many of the most striking species found in North America. Over 350 different fish, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians call the waters and forests of the Kootenai National Forest their home. Fishes of the Kootenai include such gamefish as largemouth bass and rainbow trout as well as some lesser known species like burbot and torrent sculpin. The Kootenai continues to be a stronghold for a handful of threatened, endangered, and sensitive fish species while wildlife on the Kootenai includes birds and other animals that provide world-class opportunities for wildlife viewing, several threatened, endangered, or sensitive species that are dependent upon Kootenai habitats for their survival, and numerous big and small game species that provide abundant opportunities for the hunter.
