NIH Guide Notices
- Grants.gov is migrating from developing and supporting Federal grant application forms that can be completed using PureEdge software to forms that require the use of Adobe Reader.
Most electronic submissions to NIH on or after Jan. 1, 2009, must use Adobe application forms, with the exception of:

Using Adobe: Required Software
- Grants.gov requires the use of very specific Adobe Reader versions in order to open, download and save the application forms. Currently, applicants are advised to use Adobe Reader 8.1.3 or higher. Stay tuned to the Download Software page on the Grants.gov Web site for changes.
- In most circumstances, a pop-up warns users if they are using the wrong Adobe Reader version. Using the wrong version could corrupt your application.
- If applicants are working on a PureEdge application for submission after Jan. 1, 2009 (with the exception of small business and conference grant applications and FOAs expiring Jan. 31, 2009 as noted above), they should continue to develop their research plan and work on all of the PDF attachments, but must wait to complete the application forms until the Adobe forms become available in December.
- Between September and December 2008, NIH will publish new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) without accompanying application forms, as NIH waits to incorporate the most recent changes to the application forms. We expect to have the forms for posting from Grants.gov by early December 2008 (Adobe forms for small business and conference grants will be available in early February 2009). Also, NIH currently has existing FOAs that are active for up to three years. The application forms attached to those FOAs will be replaced in the December timeframe with new ones that use Adobe forms, rendering the PureEdge forms obsolete. It is vital that applicants check the FOA in December and download the new Adobe application forms. NIH is only waiting for changes to the forms; the PDF attachments will not change.

- The overall electronic submission process of finding opportunities, downloading application packages, preparing forms, preparing the PDF attachment sections and submitting applications remains the same.
- The new Adobe forms look and feel very similar to the PureEdge forms. The changes are mainly cosmetic, with the most significant difference being the budget pages.
- Adobe forms have two major advantages - platform independence (works with both Mac and PC operating systems) and users are familiar with the Adobe Reader software.
