HISTORY

In December of 1994, Sharon P. Robinson, then Assistant Secretary for the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI), invited other Federal agencies to join with the National Institute on Early Childhood Development and Education (ECI) in addressing new challenges in the field of early childhood research, development, and dissemination.

PURPOSE

(1) To find new ways to share information and combine limited Federal resources in order to improve the learning and development of America's young children and their families; and

(2) To lay the foundation for a collaborative early childhood research agenda. The member agencies represented in the Early Childhood Research Working Group are in the Departments of: Agriculture, Defense, Education, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, Labor, State, and Commerce. In addition, the General Accounting Office, and the Office of Management and Budget are members.

ACTIVITIES

The Working Group sponsors meetings with state and local governments, private foundations, and advocacy organizations on issues of importance to early childhood research; publishes a quarterly newsletter, Early Childhood Update, and coordinates meetings that feature early childhood researchers and practitioners.
