Asher B. Durand's "Kindred Spirits"

July 1, 2005–January 2007 (originally scheduled to close February 2007)

Overview: American artist Asher B. Durand's painting Kindred Spirits was installed adjacent to the museum's American galleries in this single-work presentation. The painting depicts artist Thomas Cole and poet William Cullen Bryant surrounded by the landscape of the Catskill Mountains. Prior to display at the National Gallery of Art, the work had been purchased from the New York Public Library by the Walton Family Foundation. The work was loaned to the National Gallery courtesy of the Walton Family Foundation.
