- Searching for Residential Phone Numbers and Addresses:
- Watch abbreviations: Smith, John may be entered as Smith J. Try
variations of spelling.
- Many of these come from "published" directories -- numbers may
have changed in the meantime.
- Unlisted phone numbers should not appear.
Searching for Business Phone Numbers and Addresses:
- In keyword searching, try not to use "generic" words like American,
Association, Society, International.
- Use unique words: For American Mugwump Company, search "Mugwump"
- Some sites only include businesses that have "submitted" information.
You may need to try several directories to get the one you need.

Searching Colleges and Universities:
- University of XXX will likely be listed under U, not under XXX.
- From a university's home page, you can usually get a faculty/staff
directory or you can get to the page sponsored by a specific academic
department.
- If you need the math department at Podunk University, but all
you can find is their chemistry department: check the bottom of
the page. Here is where most pages link back to the institution's
Home Page.
Searching for Organizations:
- Links to organizations can be found on some of our Information
by Subject pages. Example: check for chemical organizations
under the Chemistry page.
- Use Web search engines to find home page for other organizations.
Every search engine is different so use the help screens.
- A good list of search engines can be found on our Web
Search Engines page.
Searching for Governmental Agencies:
- Check our Government Resources
page for links to most federal and state agencies.
- Try the FirstGov search engine for
U.S. government web pages
- You may have to search for the top level agency to find the smaller
one.
