U.S. State Department Embassies and Consulates

The Department of Veterans Affairs works with the Department of State and the Social Security Administration in providing information and assistance to veterans and their families residing in foreign countries.   Contact the nearest American Embassy or Consulate for information and assistance.

Various types of information and assistance are available to Americans residing or traveling in foreign countries through Office of American Services and Crisis Management (ACS).   Click here for information concerning travel safety.   ACS also can facilitate the transfer of funds overseas to assist U.S. citizens in need, repatriate the remains of loved ones who have died overseas, assist with medical bills, assist victims of crime, and help U.S. citizens who are detained in foreign prisons.   In other words, ACS is there to assist you and your family whenever and wherever they can.

Overseas Citizens Services (OCS) works with a wide range of domestic and international organizations to assist American citizen families in the U.S. and abroad.   Within OCS, the Office of Children's Issues is responsible for coordinating policies and providing information about international adoption and international parental child abduction.

Canada

Canada is the only foreign country in which assistance is provided to American veterans and their families through the local government.   Information and assistance is available at the 32 district offices of Veterans Affairs Canada located throughout Canada.
