Implementation and Management Science

HSR&D continues to be committed to advancing improvements in health care by encouraging the implementation of seminal research findings into clinical practice, as well as supporting the study of the process of implementation itself. HSR&D is specifically interested in research that addresses the development of new techniques for implementing findings into routine practice, the assessment of extant implementation endeavors, and comparisons among various implementation activities, e.g., central versus local, VA versus non-VA, and specialized versus generalized. HSR&D's goal is to explore innovative procedures that will allow veterans to enjoy the benefits of useful research findings within a timeline that provides the maximum health benefits. Integral to the study of the implementation of research findings is management research, which addresses a wide range of issues important to health care managers and policy makers, at the national, VISN, facility, and community level. Further, management research addresses the need for accurate data that can be used to predict utilization, and to understand the relationships between VA and non-VA health care, between primary and specialty care, and between patients and providers. These factors are essential components of successful implementation efforts. Access to care also is an area of emphasis within the context of HSR&D's Implementation and Management Science portfolio. Informational issues that affect access, veterans' geographic proximity to care, organizational characteristics, alternative and changing organizational models, and staffing issues must all be considered in an effort to maximize veterans' access to the most effective care VA can provide. Topic-specific research foci that fall within the scope of Implementation and Management Research include: organization and management concepts that may be applied to health care settings, systems to address disorders related to military and environmental exposure, surveillance and prevention measures related to the threat of bioterrorism, provider- and system-level measures to optimize patient safety, and the evaluation of clinical practice guidelines. Implementation and management research are HSR&D priorities as described in the current Program Announcement of HSR&D Priorities.
