NCI faces challenges with respect to controlled vocabulary and related standards reflecting the diverse nature of the Institute's activities. Given that NCI supports a large research portfolio, it has an obvious need for information to analyze the science portfolio, from basic research through clinical standard practice.
This subcommittee provides advice on issues relating to NCI's efforts in vocabulary use and development, expectations for how vocabulary will be used within the NCI and how NCI's vocabulary resources can assist the Cancer community. The subcommittee is also charged with providing input to NCI's Center for Bioinformatics which is engaged in activities relevant to cancer informatics, and discuss the role of the NCI in national and international informatics development. The subcommittee will recommend means of disseminating information collected in the clinic to the cancer research community and on related needs of the NCI and help ensure that vocabulary efforts are consistent with industry standards and products.
